A WORD FROM WINNY – BOARDRIDER CLUB NEWS // 15 SEPTEMBER 2021

Published on 15/09/2021

Spring has sprung of late we have had some amazing weather, coupled with this, as Covid vaccinations grow, we will hopefully see restrictions start to wind back and life return to some form of normality.

Unfortunately, the rules and regulations around community sport have not yet been amended so no community sport (whether training or a match) can be held.

We have info on boardrider affiliation 2022 getting released soon, so please keep an eye our for an email on Monday. We know there will be a lot of questions so please send through your feedback and we will set up a zoom masterclass to answer them and get over all the necessary information.

On this instalment of Words with Winny thought we would shine the spotlight on a club in the Surfing NSW backyard, another literary masterpiece, no doubt Pulitzer prize-winning material for sure.

Southend Boardriders

Southend Boardriders established in 1985 has been gracing the sands of the Bra for the past 36 years, it has always been about have a surf, have a beer,  have a laugh,  translated into Latin, could be the club motto, like semper fi with the US Marines.

Over the years, like any club, Southend have unearthed some talent, had some success in different teams events and have a good time in doing so, unfortunately,  the odd preso night has gotten out of control on occasion and seen the boys searching for a new venue the following year.

In more recent years, one of the young groms coming through the ranks has shown some promise: – Koda Killorn has had some success at Pro Juniors and now throwing his hat into the WQS cauldron, as being an integral part of the Maroubra United ABB side.

Doing his HSC at Matraville Sports High, which have developed a surfing program and proving quite popular with young surfers in the area, Koda was elected school captain this year, not sure that attendance ranked in the selection criteria.

Surfing NSW with a strong association with Matraville Sports High School, ended up with Koda, at Surfing NSW doing a school-based traineeship in Business Administration, not a bad office for a young man with his sights set on a surfing career, has shown some promise on the admin side as well, can have a bit of attitude, but smart enough to know when to wind it back, so as not to get thrown off the balcony by the older crew, self-preservation is a desirable trait growing up in Maroubra.

All in all a great kid and fun to be around, you can catch up with Koda who is on the panel of Burritos and Banter, so tune in to the next episode, have a chat, take a break from the normal routine and chill out.
