#NoTxtNoWrecks

Surfing NSW will roll out the Surfing WA “ NoTextNoWrecks” campaign & Program on an annual basis with support of the NSW Government. The Campaign will feature a promotion of no texting while driving targeting 16- 35 year olds surfers Via Surfing NSW events and social media.

Surfing NSW runs approximately 40 surfing events throughout regional and metropolitan NSW, directly engaging more than 70, 000 competitors, families, spectators, officials and volunteers in coastal communities to raise awareness of this growing issue.

Why is this message important to us?

As surfers, we spend countless hours travelling across the state to enjoy NSW’s wave-rich coastline. We’ve noticed a concerning trend within the community of driver inattention, with a marked increase of people texting while driving. We want to encourage behavioral change in drivers young and old across the state to stop the devastation of preventable road accidents caused by driver inattention.

How can you get involved?
Lead by example. Make sure your phone is safely stored away and out of reach while driving!

Community Problem
NSW Transport data from 2010 to 2014 showed there were 236 crashes where hand-held mobile phone use by drivers was identified as a contributing factor. This included seven fatal crashes and 116 injury crashes. These crash numbers are considered to be under-reported because of the difficulty of finding evidence of illegal mobile phone use at crash scenes. This suggests the size of the problem could be much greater.
