Culburra Boardriders Club may be a smaller club, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in heart, spirit, and talent. Founded in 2014 by Jason Moon, the club was created with a vision to provide a pathway for local junior surfers to develop and gain competition experience. With a deep sense of community and a commitment to nurturing young talent, Culburra Boardriders are beginning to blossom.
Recently placing 4th at the 2025 World Club Challenge held at Snapper Rocks, we decided to find out more about the club’s journey and what makes them stand out.
The Heartbeat of the Club
Jason Moon, the founder of Culburra Boardriders, is the driving force behind the club’s existence. His goal was simple: to offer local juniors including Ty and Jordy Watson, as well as the Wright siblings (Tyler, Mikey, and Owen), a solid pathway into competitive surfing. These young surfers were already making waves on the Qualifying Series (QS), and Jason wanted to ensure they had the support and opportunities to reach their full potential.
With the foundation set, Jason’s vision took shape, and Culburra Boardriders began to grow. Ty Watson, now club president, particularly focused on bringing new, younger surfers into the fold. “My main focus is to get as many juniors in the club as we can,” says Ty. “We’ve got around 25 under-12s right now, which is pretty good for a small town.”
Rising Stars: The Groms to Watch
Culburra Boardriders is especially proud of its emerging talent. The club has always placed a heavy emphasis on developing young surfers and providing them with the tools they need to succeed. These up-and-coming surfers are not only getting exposure in the local surf scene but also developing the skills necessary to compete at higher levels.
Among the club’s rising stars are Lani Cairncross and Lennox Lindsay. Both have shown immense promise and dedication, rapidly gaining recognition for their skills in the water. Under the guidance of club mentors, they’re set to take the next steps in their surfing careers, ensuring a bright future for the club.
A Legacy of Achievement
One of the club’s biggest achievements came in 2018 when they won the National Boardriders Battle at Newcastle, a huge moment for a small town club. This victory solidified Culburra’s place on the map, and now, they’re hoping for a strong performance in the upcoming Australian Boardriders Battle at Burleigh.
Despite their size, Culburra Boardriders’ impact is undeniably large. With the vision continuing to drive the club forward, the future is looking brighter than ever for CBC.
