The Mad Mex Grommet State Titles Return to Maroubra Beach

Maroubra Beach, Monday 19th June – Surfing NSW is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of the iconic Mad Mex Grommet State Titles.

The Mad Mex Grommet State Titles will take place at Maroubra Beach from the 21-24 July 2023 with entries opening Tuesday 20 June.

Over 100 talented junior surfers from across NSW will compete in the four divisions,  Under 12 and Under 14 Boys and Girls, to showcase their skills in an effort to be crowned 2023 State Champion.

As one of the major events on the junior surfing calendar, it offer’s NSW youngest surfers the chance to compete at the highest level.

With 5,500 points up for grabs, it plays an important part of the Surfing NSW junior pathway and the first chance for the young athletes to accumulate rankings points.

Maroubra Beach, known for its powerful waves and rich surfing heritage, provides the perfect arena for the prestigious event. With its iconic surf breaks and vibrant surfing community, it creates an electric atmosphere that will inspire young surfers to showcase their talent. 

Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden is thrilled to bring the Mad Mex Grommet State Titles back to Maroubra Beach. 

“This event is a important starting place for our young surfers to come together from across the state and compete to see where they sit amongst others their age group,” said Madden.

“Each year we see new talent emerge from the city and regions and we’re blown away by the level of the surfing of the groms, some as young as just 10 years old.

“We thank Mad Mex for their support, and we can’t wait to witness the next generation of surfers competing for top honours this year,” he said.

Mad Mex shares the Surfing NSW commitment to promote healthy, active lifestyles in the community, making them an ideal partner for the Mad Mex Grommet State Titles.

The event will also host a range of activities for families, competitors and the Maroubra community to get involved in. Mad Mex, Smoothstar, Surfpaints and Concrete Skate will  run a variety of workshops with something for everyone.

Surfing NSW is also partnering with Randwick Council for the Beach Breaks activations  on 23 July.

The free community event that pays homage to the proud surfing history and vibrant culture of Maroubra Beach. The day includes live music, entertainment, and engaging activities for surf enthusiasts of all ages as well as the Surfing Walk of Fame presentation at 1pm.

This annual ceremony recognises the remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication of four local surfers and surf lifesavers.

“A proud supporter of Surfing NSW, Randwick City Council is delighted to see The Mad Mex Grommet State Titles hosted on our local beach each year, shining a light on Maroubra Beach’s status as a premier surfing location,” said Randwick City Mayor Dylan Parker.

“It will be awesome to see Maroubra Beach come alive once again with the buzz and anticipation surrounding both events as the community comes together to participate and celebrate our local surfing culture,” Parker said.
