CITY OF NEWCASTLE TO HOST 2021 / 2022 AUSTRALIAN BOARDRIDERS BATTLE FINAL

Published on 23/11/2021

Newcastle City Beach has proven time and time again it is the number one venue in Australia when it comes to hosting the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final, and 2022 will be no different as Surfing Australia and City of Newcastle today announced dates for the big show on February 5 – 6, 2022.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle has hosted the final round of the series since 2017 and looks forward to welcoming back surfers and supporters to the shores of Newcastle Main Beach in 2022.

“Newcastle continues to shine as a surfing mecca, cemented by its own long-running homegrown event Surfest, Surfing Australia’s National Board Riders Battle and our inclusion on the WSL Championship Tour in 2021,” Cr Nelmes said.

With a rich history full of massive moments, it’s a guarantee that yet again the 2021/22 Series Final will see the cream of the crop rise to the top at Newcastle City Beach.

Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres said the event firmly positions NSW on the map for the enthusiastic world surfing community.

“The Australian Boardriders Battle is the biggest grassroots boardriders’ competition in the country and Newcastle is loved by surfers and travellers alike for its unforgettable coastline and world-class hospitality.

“The participation of WSL athletes draws international attention from surfing fans around the globe. This is a prime example of a world-class event meeting a world-class destination, with a world-class audience, and having held it in Newcastle since 2017, this year’s Australian Boardriders Battle will feel right at home.

“I look forward to seeing the competition and encourage all who attend to help support our state’s Covid- 19 recovery by planning ahead and enjoying all that this beautiful city has to offer.”

Surfing Australia CEO Chris Mater said: “Newcastle has really become the home of the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle National Grand Final for nearly half a decade now and we couldn’t be happier to be on City Beach again come February for the greatest club surfing event on earth! Bring it on!”

The 2021/22 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle has been bigger and better than ever since launching into its ninth season on the Gold Coast earlier this year.
In what has become world-renowned as the biggest and best club surfing series on the planet, the nine-leg Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Series travels to all corners of the country with events at epic locations like Newcastle for the National Final.
