Sydney, Australia – One month to go until the VW State Classic 2025, a historic event set to bring together five Surfing NSW State Titles: Junior, Masters, Longboard, SUP, High School, under one banner for the very first time.
Taking place in Coffs Harbour from May 27 – June 1, the six day event will feature over 600 of NSW’s best surfers, aged 10 to 80+. Held across three breaks on the Coffs Coast, the VW State Classic 2025 will bring NSW’s surf community together for a week of competition, connection and celebrations that extend beyond the water.
A New Era for State-level Competition
With one month to go, Surfing NSW CEO Lucas Townsend said the VW State Classic signals a new focus for the organisation on uplifting grassroots competition and bringing community together to celebrate our surf culture.
“The VW State Classic is a first for Surfing NSW, bringing shortboard, longboard and SUP together in one flagship event. It’s a celebration of grassroots competition and the legacy of being a NSW State Champion.
Beyond the lineup, it unites competitors and the local community at Aanuka Beach House to honour the region’s rich surf culture and coastal spirit.
We’re stoked to have Sawtell, Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour Boardriders Clubs involved, and we’re grateful to the local surf community for generously sharing their waves with our State competitors.”
The evolution of the State Titles has been made possible through the support of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, who have extended their partnership with Surfing NSW into its eighth year.
Volkswagen continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening surf culture across New South Wales. The brand provides critical support to the state’s boardrider club network, athlete development programs, and major events, helping to ensure the next generation of NSW surfers has the support they need to succeed.
“Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is proud to continue our partnership with Surfing NSW for the 8th year in a row. As someone who loves the ocean, I’m proud to be part of a brand that supports the Australian surfing community and celebrates the amazing coastal culture of NSW. We’re committed to ensuring that surfing is supported for years to come, giving young and of course older surfers the opportunity to shine and grow. We’re buzzing with excitement to be the major sponsor for the State Classic. We can’t wait to join the surfing community to celebrate this amazing event.” – Nathan Johnson, Director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles
Beyond the Waves
The VW State Classic 2025 will drive visitation to the Coffs Harbour region, supporting local businesses and increasing the region’s profile on a national level.
City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Nikki Williams welcomed the announcement, saying it reinforces Coffs Harbour’s status as a premier tourism and sporting destination.
“We’re proud to host the VW State Classic 2025 right here on the Coffs Coast. Our coastline has a rich surfing history, and this event is a fantastic way to celebrate it – bringing together surfers, supporters and visitors to experience the best of our waves, community – and everything our region has to offer.”
While the competition takes centre stage, the six-day event will also feature a lineup of activations featuring talent development clinics, trivia, fireside chats, Q&A sessions, outdoor movie screenings, and a vibrant green space filled with market stalls.
The central event hub will be located at Aanuka Beach House, offering a vibrant space for spectators, competitors, families and locals to gather throughout the week.
“We are so excited to be a part of Surfing NSW’s VW State Classic, especially with all titles combining in the one event. It is truly a wonderful chance for people to see the beauty that is Coffs Harbour. Aanuka Beach House and Diggers Beach will be the home to amazing community events that will showcase the magic of surfing and Coffs Harbour.” – Jason Hirt, Chief of Vibes, Tilley and Wills Hotels.
