DAY 2/5: Rip Curl GromSearch Oz Cup, covered by Sun Bum 2025

Back at North Diggers Beach, for the second day of competition where conditions started small and built steadily on the incoming tide, peaking for the U16 boys in the afternoon.

Navaj Holmes and Scarlett Rennie owned their U14 girls heats, locking in semifinal spots with smooth, confident surfing.

The U16 girls division kicked off with a bang. Talia Tebb turned heads with a powerful and flowing performance. The natural footer combined speed and control, laying down very mature, linked manoeuvres for a standout 14.5 heat total. Lani Cairncross brought the grit with sharp turns and smart surfing sending her straight into the quarterfinals.

Owen’s Expression Session then had groms next-level frothing. It’s what this sport’s all about. Big smiles, big moments, big heart, with the down-to-earth and awe-inspiring Big O and Barney Miller.

The action continued to brew in the U16 boys, where Locana Cullen went skyward, as he does, to throw down two 8-point rides to combo his heat. Xavi Rockliff Boehm and Sunny Wouters kept the drama alive with buzzer-beaters, stringing together two-turn combos to edge themselves into round 2.

Waves of the day? In the U16 boys Luca Martin’s set wave entailed a backhand snap straight into the lip with a full-speed floater to finish, rewarded with a 9.0. Followed by local boy Rio Luther Barr, who scored a huge 9.17 on one of the bigger waves of the day, with four critical turns with full commitment on his forehand, he was not playing it safe. Judges lit them up and no questions were asked.
