WOOLWORTHS SURFER GROMS COMP LIGHTS UP IN SMALL SURF IN KIAMA.

Published on 13/11/2021

The Kiama instalment of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp series kicked off with a bang today with grommets all tearing into punchy two-foot conditions at Jones Beach.

Kash Brown (Cronulla) made his intentions clear as he smashed his Under-14 Boys quarterfinal, posting a giant 16.77 two-wave total. Brown executed a barrage of impressive backhand snaps and carves to cement his spot into the semi-finals which will take place tomorrow.

After standout performances at Coffs Habour last week Grace Gosby (Cronulla), Lucy Darragh (Gerringong) and Ruby Trew (Manly) all made their way south to Kiama, where all three girls proceeded to put on a clinic in the small surf. All three surfers claimed wins in their respective quarterfinals with a series of decent manoeuvres to earn themselves positions into the final day of competition tomorrow.

Jaggar Phillips (Maroubra) showed he was a star on the rise as he claimed his second-round heat with a respectable 12.83. two-wave heat total. The lightning-fast goofy-footer shone in the tiny conditions as he snapped and carved his way to victory in the heat.

All other heat results can be seen here.

The elite event will see male and female surfers competing in four different age divisions, starting at Under-8’s right through to the Under-14’s and will be the first event of the series run in the state this year.

Close to 80 competitors are expected in the event.

All competitors and spectators must abide by the COVID-19 regulations that will be in place on the event days.

Regarded as one of the major steppingstones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state.
