Volkswagen Surfmasters Cronulla Returns in 2023

Published on 06/09/2023

The Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters is set to return to Cronulla Beach the 21st October 2023 for an epic day of competition. The one-day event will see over 100 of NSW’s best shortboarders aged over 28 compete.

The annual event showcases the states talent-pool of masters surfers and is highly regarded by former professionals to local grassroots legends who are drawn to the Sutherland Shire to compete each year.

Although, the surfing is just the beginning! With on-site activations and giveaways occurring throughout the day, the Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters is an event for everyone!

First held in 2010 to foster the passion and healthy lifestyle associated with surfing for over 28-year-olds,the partnership between Volkswagen and Surfing NSW has remained strong.

The event will see five age divisions being contested with the Over-28 Men, Over-35 Men and Women, Over-45 Men and Women, Over-55 Men and Women, and Over-65 Men all competing.

Natalie Hawkins, Community Projects Manager at Cronulla RSL shared “Cronulla RSL are proud to support the 2023 Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters. We are honoured to stand alongside an event that celebrates masters surfing, demonstrating that age is but a number when it comes to a valued sport our community cherishes. We believe in the power of ageless enthusiasm, and this event is the perfect platform to showcase it.

As a cornerstone of our community, we’re deeply committed to supporting initiatives that boost our local economy, create unforgettable experiences, and bring people together. This event promises thrilling waves, but also a chance to showcase our beloved Cronulla.”

Jordan Widenstrom, last year’s winner of the O28 division, grew up watching the Surf Masters comp in Cronulla. Competing with Cronulla Sharks Boardriders for almost 20 years, the local competitor counted down the years until he was old enough to compete.

“I had always watched the Surf Masters comp in Cronulla before being old enough to compete. I used to love watching all the older guys from my board riders club who I knew ripped go up against the best from their age groups from across NSW…and jumped at the opportunity to enter once I was over 28.”

Jordan will be competing this year in hopes to defend his winning title.

“I would love to get to the final and have a shot at a win again. Getting the win would be the cherry on top. Hopefully the waves show up at the alley and everyone rips in on the day.”

As for unexpected rivals, Jordan shared it was his good mate Hayden Blair who gave a great performance over the last couple of years, even taking the win of Jordan the year before last.

“Competing in the event the past few years has been amazing. Having the chance to go up against some of the best ‘masters’ surfers at my local beach with priority in heats and quality judging is something that excites me to compete.”

But the action doesn’t stop in the water! Bring your family and friends down for a weekend of fun. With activations happening on the beach and prizes to be won, the Volkswagen Cronulla Surfmasters is an event for everyone.

Sarah Walker, Marketing Manager – Digital and Campaigns at Volkswagen Group stated “The Kombi was a surf culture icon. So too will be its electric descendant. Come to Cronulla and see what the buzz is all about.”

With the launch of an exciting new vehicle, you won’t want to miss the surprise. Head down to the Kombi Rally on the beach and watch some top-tier surfing whilst you’re at it. The Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters has so much to offer.

One returning sponsorship from last year will be Matt Callaghan Property, who will be on site offering their services to all beach-goers. More excitingly, they have lots of promotions to give away as well as a brand new surfboard for one lucky winner.

“We are proud to again sponsor the Volkswagen Cronulla Surf Masters, as our community and surfing are so entwined. It’s a very healthy sport, being in the ocean is good for you physically, but it’s also great for your mental health.”

We can’t wait for the action to come!
