Epic Day of Junior Surfing as Level Lifts Again Ahead of Finals Tomorrow

Published on 12/04/2022

COFFS HARBOUR, (Tuesday 12 April 2022): Just when the level of junior surfing couldn’t possibly be lifted higher, it jumped again on day four of the Billabong Oz Grom Cup presented by Coopers Surf and the epic, high-performance surfing of the kids was live webcast for the world to witness. See today’s live replay.

Today at Park Beach, Coffs Harbour the super swell continued and so did the courage and talent of the surfers. Sets were once again more than triple overhead for some. It could not have been more challenging but also rewarding for the young surfers with almost all finals across the board decided ahead of tomorrow.

It was very much about single wave choice today, with a tough paddle out the groms who made the most out of the longer, open-faced waves were able to take the pressure off for their second or third waves head closer towards being crowned the Billabong Oz Grom Cup Champ for 2022.

Once again locals shone through with both Smart groms, Rosie (Under 18) and Creed (Under 16) as well as Will Martin who all continued their momentum to lock in their spots in the Finals.

Young surfing prodigies Mila and Billie Berg (Burleigh) are the children of champion ironman and surfer Wes Berg. Today he took great pride swimming out with his girls in the Under 12 Quarter Finals, where parent-assist is allowed.

Billie and Mila both showed a level of confidence and maturity far beyond their years in the solid surf. The sisters who surfed consecutive quarter finals both secured their places in the Semi Finals tomorrow after taking out their respective heats.

Both the Boys and Girls Under 12’s Quarter Finals were inspiring to watch. The groms not only paddled out with strength and determination to the north side of the island, but they looked fearless and confident as they paddled onto, dropped into and tore apart the six-foot waves. Every single surfer today was commended by the judges, event crew and parents.

Both the Under 14 Girls and Boys were a real standout with very impressive wave choices and high scores rolling in to reward them.

Lachlan Arghyros (Kingscliff) locked in one of the highest waves of the day with a 7.67 and backed it up with a 5.33 to find himself in a stacked final against the state’s hottest Under 14 Boys including Max Mcgillvray, Ocean Lancaster and Balin Cullin who also put on a great show of high-performance junior surfing.

Finals start tomorrow (Wednesday 13 April) with location conditions pending with the call for the day in the morning. Finals day will be live webcast.
