BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES FROM GROMMETS IN THE FINALS OF THE WOOLWORTHS SURFER GROMS COMP AT COFFS HARBOUR.

Published on 07/11/2021

The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps in Coffs Harbour wrapped up in a spectacular fashion today with champions being crowned across all four age divisions.

Max Mcgillivray (Evans Head) finished his Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp campaign with a bang, taking top honours in the Under-14 Boys division. Mcgillivray remained sharp as a tack over the entirety of the event, winning every heat with totals in excess of 13.00. Runner-up and local favourite Will Martin (Coffs Harbour) put on a valiant performance in the final, but was unable to take the win away from Mcgillivray who left his fellow finalists chasing two-wave combinations to take away the lead.

Ruby Trew (Manly) continued to build the momentum that’s won her multiple events over the years as she took out the Under-14 Girls division. Trew waited for the dying minutes to find her second wave which allowed her to jump her fellow finalists and claim the victory with a respectable 9.30 heat total.

Lucy Darragh (Gerringong) put on the standout performance of the event, notching up a perfect ten-point ride and an 8.17 to take out the Under-12 Girls division. Darragh executed three gigantic vertical backhand snaps to post the perfect score and take the title back to the NSW south coast. Darragh took out the Woolworths Pick Fresh, Play Fresh award for her efforts.

Kendall Payne (Gerringong) made the long drive from Gerringong worthwhile as she took out the Under-10 Girls division. Payne notched up multiple high scores over the course of her dual finals to take the win ahead of a promising field. Payne also took out the Pic’s Peanut Butter Performer Award thanks to her performance.

Jaya Suhendra (Byron Bay) showed style and poise beyond his years as he took down some stellar competition to take out the Under-8 Mixed division. The stylish natural-footer linked together a multitude of turns to claim the victory and as a result marked himself as a young up-and-comer to watch in the coming years.

All finals scores can be seen here.

The elite event saw male and female surfers competing in four different age divisions, starting at Under-8’s right through to the Under-14’s and will be the first event of the series run in the state this year.

Close to 80 competitors entered in the event.

All competitors and spectators must abide by the COVID-19 regulations that will be in place on the event days.

Regarded as one of the major steppingstones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state.
