AUSTRALIA’S BEST JUNIOR SURFERS SHINE IN TRICKY CONDITIONS AT THE 2021 BILLABONG OZ GROM CUP.

Day one of the 2021 Billabong Oz Grom Cup pres. by Coopers Surf Australia kicked off today with some of Australia’s most promising young surfers shining in tricky four-foot surf.

Riley Munro (Tweed Heads, NSW) set an early benchmark in the 16-and-Under Boys division, smacking an array of beautiful backside snaps and carves to notch up a solid 14.27 two-wave heat total. As a result of the aforementioned performance Munro booked himself a spot straight into the third round of competition which will take place later in the event window.

Lennix Smith (Barrack Point, NSW) and Eden Hasson (Port Stephens) both put on dominant performances in the same division, posting heat totals in excess of 13.00 to also take heat wins.

Rosie Smart (Sawtell, NSW) and Coco Cairns (Tewantin, Qld) made their presence felt in the 16-and-Under Girls as both girls put on impressive performances to finish their opening heats with heat totals in excess of 11.80. Both surfers will make their next appearance in the third round of competition.

Hunter Anderson (Moffat Beach, Qld) and Max McGillivray (Evans Head, NSW) shone over the course of their 12-and-Under Boys round one heats with Anderson posting a gigantic 17.07 two-wave total and McGillivray notching up a solid 15.00 total to earn their spots straight into the third round.

The prestigious five-day event – now in its eighth year – will kick off from the 7th – 11th April and looks set to cater for over 200 competitors in nine different divisions.

Former champions include 2016 World Junior Champion and current WSL World Championship Tour surfer Macy Callaghan who claimed her respective division in the event’s inaugural year. Since then, the event has been won by a range of Australia’s best and most promising junior surfers.

In addition to all the action in the ocean, the final two days of the event will also be webcast through Surfing NSW’s social channels.

All event presentations will be hosted at the Hoey Moey.

Boys and Girls divisions for the event include 8-and-Under Mixed, 10-and-Under, 12-and-Under, 14-and-Under and 16-and-Under.

The Billabong Oz Grom Cup pres. by Coopers Surf Australia will commence each day at 7:30 am with the call for the day’s schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45 am. The event hotline number is 0458 247 212 which will leave a voice recorded message each morning of the event.
