Seventeen of Central NSW’s top boardrider clubs converged at North Narrabeen over the weekend for the ABB Central NSW Qualifier. In testing yet clean 2-3 ft conditions, Avoca emerged victorious after a day of tight battles and standout performances across the draw.
The local crowd was treated to world-class surfing, with North Narrabeen, Queenscliff and Freshwater all putting on strong displays. Former Championship Tour surfer Nathan Hedge was a crowd favourite, proudly representing their hometown club. Meanwhile, Jordy Lawler also turned heads, taking out Wave of the Day.
In a thrilling final showdown, Avoca Boardriders Club sealed victory thanks to a clutch 7.13 score from Caleb Tancred, edging out Queenscliff in second place. Winter Vincent kept the pressure on with a key 5.07, while North Narrabeen and Freshwater rounded out the top four.
Adding to the day’s accolades, Winter Vincent from Queenscliff was named Overall Performer of the Day after a string of standout heats. “We had to come through the repechage and earn every heat today. The body’s feeling it now, but this will see our club in the national final next year. Hands down the best team event to be a part of and watch.”
The Team Spirit Award went to North Narrabeen, who brought unmatched energy and camaraderie throughout the event.
Special mention also goes to North Steyne, Bungan, North Avalon (NASA) and Newport Plus, who finished inside the top eight and earned their place at the national final.
