Established in 2016 by a young, motivated team of surfers, Surf Camp Down Under has organically grown to become one of the area’s most popular attractions. What began as helping local backpackers with surf lessons quickly expanded to include local programs, making it a beloved part of the Yamba community. The primary goal is to ensure all participants have an unforgettable and enjoyable experience, thanks to the variety of breaks Yamba supplies.
We spoke to head surf coach Shayne Sutherland who talked us through the ins and outs of what Surf Camp Down Under has to offer.
At Surf Camp Down Under, there’s something for everyone. They provide private and group lessons for visitors, but their standout program is the “Grom Squad.” This unique experience lets groms catch waves at sunrise, followed by a hearty breakfast. While they cater to both kids and adults, it’s recommended for children under 8 to opt for a private lesson. Impressively, they once taught a 94-year-old named John, showcasing that age is no barrier to enjoying the surf. Surf Camp Down Under also partners with local schools during term one and term four to introduce kids to the joy of surfing.
When it comes to safety, that is a paramount concern and main priority for Surf Camp Down Under. They adhere to industry standards with a 1:8 instructor-to-student ratio, often adding extra staff members for group lessons with kids. Instructors maintain up-to-date qualifications and participate in ongoing training to ensure a high level of confidence in keeping students safe.
Surf Camp Down Under’s success story revolves around creating a tight-knit community in Yamba, one that fosters a safe, fun, and healthy environment for families. Yamba, a welcoming small town, offers its embrace to visitors, and the school’s commitment to nurturing this community spirit is its ultimate achievement.
