After a five-month hiatus of elite surfing events in NSW, the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp kicked off today in playful two-to-three foot conditions at Macauleys Beach.
The Under-14 division provided a snapshot into the future and put forward names that looked set to shine in the coming years. In the Boys side of the draw, Max Mcgillivray (Evans Head), Will Martin (Coffs Harbour), Pheonix Visscher (Redhead) and Jaxon Cowan (Norah Head) all put on commanding performances to earn respective first round victories and earn their spot into the quarterfinals.
Ocea Curtis (Lennox Head), Ruby Trew (Manly), Ava Arghyros (Kingscliff) and Mia Baker (Lennox Head) all made their presence felt in the 14 Girls division, with all girls locking in heat victories. All four surfers shone in the slower high-tide waves, posting a handful of decent scores for a variety of progressive manoeuvres. All four surfers will make their next appearance in the quarterfinals.
Joey Silk (Crescent Head) showed immense promise in the Under-12 Boys division, nailing an array of beautiful snaps and carves to take a heat victory with a solid 14.70 two-wave heat total.
The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp series will see all champions crowned tomorrow.
The competition will commence each day at 7:30am with the call for the day’s schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am. The event hotline is 0458 247 212.
The elite event will see male and female surfers competing in four different age divisions, starting at Under-8’s right through to the Under-14’s and will be the first event of the series run in the state this year.
Close to 80 competitors are expected in the event.
All competitors and spectators must abide by the COVID-19 regulations that will be in place on the event days.
Regarded as one of the major steppingstones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state.
